ED DAVIS BAND - Keith Richard's Dead - lp RUR#61
Guitarists Mike Enright and Byron Stevens met drummer Curt Gary at the University of Cincinnati in the early ‘70s.By 1975 they were jamming together, abusing controlled substances, and listening closely to Lee Perry, Pere Ubu, and the singles coming out of New York and London. A visit to a Bloomington, Indiana, basement to see MX-80 Sound was pivotal, as were debut LPs from The Ramones and The Patti Smith Group.
In the winter of 1976, local guerilla art collective We're Just Like You put on a show at the university and needed a band. With the addition of Mike’s high-school friend Bob Cotter on bass and a few weeks of rehearsals, Mike, Curt, and Byron formed Ed Davis, a name chosen because it meant nothing and revealed nothing. The group stayed together after the show and slowly built a following in Cincinnati clubs, eventually playing a series of legendary parties in their downtown loft.
In '78 the band cut a single, played on WAIF-FM, opened for The Patti Smith Group at Bogart's, and lost guitarist Byron, who moved to NYC. Ed soldiered on for another year with new vocalist and pianist Fran Slater; bassist Bob switched to guitar; and Mike picked up the bass.
Their last show, at the 5th Street loft backed by the Shake It label’s legendary The Customs, was in June of 1979.
- East Bay Punks-From the Streets of Berkeley 1978-81 - lp RUR#62
Disillusionment with the "mellow 70's" was turning to rage as the US waged a proxy war in Central America, and San Francisco ignited into fiery riots after the assassination of its mayor and first openly gay city council member. The Saucers reflected these times with caustic humor and impassioned social commentary. In 1980, the band after the departure of first keyboard player, Joey Michaels, renamed themselves The Allies, adding dynamic lead guitarist Craig Magee, formerly with Dyan Diamond (Runaways). With the addition of Magee, the band pivoted from the Saucers' Farfisa-dominated garage punk to a more muscular, guitar-driven sound.
Local music producer and KALX engineer Terry Hammer worked behind the scenes to get both bands into the studio, with varied results, on display here. He also recorded a number of live shows for the two groups, and it's mostly thanks to his efforts that this music survives today. After the definitive split of the band, the drummer Jake Smith went on to join hardcore punk band Crucifix, played in an early version of Faith No More.
Stormtrooper formed and disbanded in a fury in 1975 before punk rock arose
out of the ashes of glam and pub rock! .Their debut single "I'm A Mess" was described by the British music press as "the sound of a commuter being shoved under a tube train in the rush hour, one for howling at the moon and a tale of drunkenness in the wild of Soho" The band formed at the bar in the Marquee Club by British front man Nigel Hutchings and bassist Jeff Piccinini who recruited John Pilka on guitar and Mike Lee on drums.
They recorded a demo of 4 songs in August of 1975 and then signed with Corruption Management on the Portobello Road for a couple of pints and some distant promises. The band played only one gig at the Bath Pavilion, then split-up. This, ladies and gentleman, was before the birth of punk rock and the tracks of this anthology are pure “punk” before... punk!!!!
"The Mighty Plod" were formed in May 1972 by Colchester Musician Steve Greenfield. The original line-up was Michael Natkansk (drums), Martin Newell (vocals), Carl Symanski (bass), John Fitzsimons (guitar).Their music was based on glam rocks hits of the day such as Slade and Sweet, and a selection of rock'n'roll standards like 'Johnny B. Goode' and 'Shakin' all over' done in a fast thrash style. In 1975 the band recorded five studio tracks including the amazing ‘Neo City’. The Mighty Plod turned up again in a feature on lost treasures from the Glam Rock era, the most important bands that got away, in the January 2002 ‘Record Collector’.
As a result of this In March 2003 RPM records released the ‘classic’ compilation CD ‘Velvet Tinmine’, that includes 20 tracks selected by the music magazine.

The Action, one of Canada’s first punk bands, formed in Ottawa in 1977. Their style combined early American and English punk like The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, and The Vibrators with rock influences such as The Rolling Stones’ guitar attack and The Allman Brothers’ dual-guitar and slide-guitar leads, which, combined with provocative lyrics and an untouchable stage show, made The Action a musician’s band. The Action was chosen to open for The Ramones in 1978 and helped spearhead punk across Canada when they supported The Stranglers on that band’s first North American tour the same year. This collection covers The Action’s short but wild career from 1977-’78: their debut 12-inch (which includes the cult classic “TV’s on the Blink”) and a recording for a never-released follow-up EP, plus smokin’ live tracks recorded at the infamous Rotters Club in Ottawa, Canada.
Southern California Punk pioneers!!! Started in 1974 as ‘Glass Onion’, they were based in San Diego. Philadelphia’s punk rock finest band! Started in 1977, the band was really popular at the ‘The Hot Club’, one of the main punk venues in USA. They had a punk ethos, but laced with a potent pop mentality and a big sense of pure theatricality that reminded one of suck disparate outfits as Sparks, The Weirdos, Lance Loud’s Mumps and The Dickies, not to mention The Monkees! Unfortunately the band recorded only one acetate and few studio tracks that you can find in this anthology that contains the best production of their unlucky career!!!Pure US punk genius, grab this!!!
The Dawgs were born in Beverly, Massachusetts, ( just north of Boston ) in the late 1970's. Mr. Chester Voumette career started as drummer for numerous Chicago bands from 1978 to1981 (Popperz, The Martian Plan etc...). In January 1978, Chester armed himself with a Fender Duo Sonic II guitar and wraparound sunglasses, took front mic, and spit up these rustic demo recordings of Chester-penned tunes. What they lacked in production quality, they made up for in volume and intensity. With Chester’s busy drumming schedule, public performances of Chester Vomit and The Dry Heaves were limited, but legendary. Hurling lyrics through his trademark sneer, a clothespin affixed to his cheek (Chester’s aversion to needles ruled out body piercing), his guitar slung low between his legs, Chester retched out nonstop breakneck rockers. When fans and the media asked what he called his brand of music, the label-hating Chester’s standard reply was, “We play Stunk Rock.”FOUR STUDIO TRACKS!!!100% DEMENTED B-MOVIE GARAGE PUNK!!!
