CHEETAH CHROME / DEAD BOYS

new york (usa)

While he didn't manage to become rich and famous in the process,Cheetah Chrome was one of the first guitar heroes of American punk rock who helped give underground music a soely needed kick in the ass in the mid-70's as part of the vital Cleveland,Ohio scene while also helping launch the punk explosion at CBGB.
Born Gene O'Connor in Cleveland,OH,Cheetah Chrome got his first guitar as a Christmas present after having his head turned around by seeing the Beatles on the Ed SullivanShow, but he found his first major inspiration as a guitarist when he heard the song "Born to be Wild"by Steppenwolf. In the early '70's,Chrome had become a major fan of the Stooges, the MC5,and Alice Cooper, and began playing in Cleveland based cover bands with drummer John Madansky, who later took the stage name Johnny Blitz.Through a classified ad,Chrome and Blitz met Cleveland underground rock visionary Peter Laughner and soon joined hi fabled pre-punk band Rocket From The Tombs.Creative squabbles broke up RFTT before they could make much of a dent outside of Cleveland.Laughner and Crocus Behemoth(aka David Thomas) went on to form Pere Ubu,and Chrome,Blitz, and singer Steve Bator-better known as Stiv Bators, and very briefly a member of a late RFTT line-up-formed a hard rock band called Frankenstein.Frankenstein only lasted a few months, but when word about the nascent New York punk rock scene spearheaded by the Ramones filtered back to Cleveland,Chrome,Bators and Blitz joined forces with guitarist William Wilden(aka Jimmy Zero)and bassist Jeff Halmagy(aka Jeff Magnum)and formed the Dead Boys. The band's intense live show, sparked by Chrome's powerful guitar work, made them a sensation after their New York debut at CBGB.The band was signed to Sire Records in 1977,releasing the classic album Young,Loud and Snotty that year. However, while the band was the talk of the punk scene, they were unable to break through to wider recognition, and a disappointing second album coupled with in-fighting and spiraking drug and alcohol problems led to the Dead Boys breakup in 1980,though the band would briefly reunite in the mid-'80's.
While Bators managed a fairly sucessful career after the Dead Boys,Cheetah Chrome kept a much lower profile, occasionally recording in collaborating with Angry Samoans founder Jeff Dahl, did a series of gigs with Nico, and performed for a spell with his group the Ghetto Dogs.In the mid-'90s,Chrome relocated to Nashville and began putting together a band;after recording a 1996 solo album that went unreleased due to record company problems(it was produced by Genya Ravan, who was also behind the board for Young Loud and Snotty),Chrome began touring periodically.A 1999 show in Detroit resulted in his first full-length solo release,Alive in Detroit,on which Chrome jokingly mentions a recurring rumor about his death that led to an obituary being published in a New York newspaper.Chrome continues to write new material and in 2001 was blocking out plans for a new solo album;he was also immotalized in song by Tommy Womack, whose 1998 album Positively NaNA featured the song "Whatever Happened to Cheetah Chrome?" ("the man with the orange Dead Boys dome?")

The Zeros, aka "the Mexican Ramones", who hailed from Chula Vista, California, beginning in 1976. The band was comprised of Robert Lopez (later known as El Vez, "The Mexican Elvis") and Javier Escovedo (younger brother of Alejandro Escovedo) who were attending Chula Vista High, and Hector Penalosa and Baba Chenelle who attended Sweetwater High School. In 1977, The Zeros played their first major gig in Los Angeles at the Orpheum Theater, across the street from Tower Records/Sunset Strip, an influential record store. Opening the show was the first ever performance by The Germs, followed by The Zeros and then The Weirdos. The gig was promoted by Peter Case of The Nerves who later fronted The Breakaways and The Plimsouls. The Zeros first release, "Wimp" b/w "Don't Push Me Around" was released in 1977 on Bomp Records.
Covers of songs by The Zeros were released by Los Angeles bands Wednesday Week ("They Say That Everything's Alright") and The Muffs ("Beat Your Heart Out").

The musical history of this amazing artist began with the band Nerves from Los Angeles. Their self-produced debut EP, Nerves, contained three small masterpieces, one was the fantastic 'Hanging On The Telephone' (that Blondie, later on, made a huge success).
Following the break-up of this seminal line-up, Paul Collins began his new adventure with the Beat. In the years, 1979-1980 they put out some of the most significant testimonies of its kind.
In 1989, the band returns to the scene, bringing their historical songs back to life, alongside new inspired compositions. Their presence at Road to Ruins will be one of the most important rock events in the entire 2006!
Absolutely not to miss!

Chariot is a pop supergroup formed by Ken Stringfellow and Brian Young of The POSIES, with Javier Escovedo of The Zeros and True Believers, and Pat Fear of White Flag. The band has been described as "an unlikely and alarmingly good combination of classic Posies harmony, Escovedo’s roots rock and roll ethics, and Fear’s legendary pop-punk song craft... as if the "Exile" period Stones had an after show jam and invited Alex Chilton, Arthur Lee, Paul Weller and Sky Saxon on stage.
Stand by for bidding wars." Chariot’s original material varies from straight ahead rock and roll with a Stooges flair, to sensitive sixties pop, from Gram Parsons period Byrds’ country rock, to classically morbid cowboy ballads. "I AM BEN HUR" is a collection of sixteen songs which covers most of the influences these admired and respected musicians-songwritters don’t dare to show with their own bands, and also some of the influences they are famous for.

GODS OF GAMBLE

italy

This band came from Sardina, a great place for rock’n’roll music. Their powerful guitar sound is devoted to bands like Dictators and Dead Boys. At the moment, they’re one of the best bands in Europe. Absolutely one of the main attarctions of this festival!

TEMPORAL SLUTS

italy

The band starts kicking out in 1995, when got back from a tour in America. Once back from the States the Temporal Sluts realizes its first record, a 10" split with Californian The Humpers called "A touching date" (Hate records). 1996 is the year for the first album "Bad news never comes alone", celebrated with a live showcase in Milan together with the Empty Set, from Detroit (the band of Ron Asheton and Mike Davis). First 2 singles come out for Belgium label Demolition Derby and German Radio Blast, and some Sluts tracks are included in several European and American compilations. This gives the band the chance to be known outside its country and to play live shows in Italy and the rest of Europe. To be mentioned the tour with French friends TV Killers, which appears with the Sluts on a split 7" (1998). As a local rnr band, the Temporal Sluts has many problems to face but it manages to play several live shows, which are very appreciated by punk rock people. After some line-up changes, the Temporal Sluts are ready again to rock around the world, and often hangs out with European and American bands. At present a new single "All the revolutions I need" has just come out, awaiting for the album to be realized this coming Autumn.

THE IDOL LIPS

THE STEELFINGERS

italy

Amazing soul punk from Roma! Their sound is devoted to MC5, Dictators and other greats. Absolutely, one of the best bands in the prolific scene of the town. They just released a cd with 4 tracks, pure explosion of sound! They’ll start to work to their first Lp, that it will be a ‘classic’...be sure of this!

SUNGLASSES AFTER DARK

italy

One of the ‘top’ punk bands of the ‘Eternal Town’! Leaded by the carismatic vocalist/guitarist Baron, the band just recorded great tracks ispirated to NYC glam/proto punk of the seventies.
The video of their hit ‘Love Her All’, was played many times on various sat TV’s. In the next months the band will finish the recordings of their first Lp. Hot!

REAL SWINGERS

italy

Great punk’a’rolla without frills!
Their first CD was released on VML records. In 1997 to support the record they did a small tour in the USA supporting Squirgun. In 1998 they played a lot in Italy and also did some shows together with Scared of Chaka with whom they later released a 7" split. The record was issued on Ballroom Blitz records, the band's label. The band kept playing sometimes as a three pieces some others as a four pieces unit and after the first split out in 1999, in 2000 they released another 7" this time with Squitgun. The songs had been recorded in the States at Sonic Iguana studios by Mass Giorgini just at the end of the US tour. They have put out a 7" on Nicotine records and the third and new, marvellous, earpleasing Cd "RUBBER BALL" on Valium recordz.
